Lextar Electronics has announced a partnership with Cree and LED lighting vendor Leadray Energy to develop LED street lamps specifically for competition for government open-bid procurement.

Taiwan has set aside a 2016 budget of NT$5.49 billion (US$168 million) to help local governments replace about 690,000 mercury vapor street lamps with LED models, with open-bid procurement to begin in third-quarter 2015.

The cooperation will combine Cree's experience in developing LED street lamps, Lextar's LED packaging technology and Leadray's mechanical design capability, and aims to develop new LED street lamps with luminous efficiency of 200lm/W, 25% higher than existing models, Lextar indicated.

Leadray-developed LED street lamps have been adopted by several local governments in Taiwan. Lextar introduced Leadray-developed heat-dissipation technology for use in LED street lamps at the end of 2014, with such lamps having passed Taiwan national standard CNS15233.
